WHO GETS TO DIE?
Square
in the Face
Square in the Face, the second in my mystery series
set in Portland, has sold out its first printing at HarperCollins. There
are still copies in bookstores, but I hope to hear it's going back to
press soon. It's gotten great reviews, including one in the Seattle
Times and another in the Dallas Morning News.
Circles
of Confusion
Circles
of Confusion has been nominated for an Agatha, one of
the biggest mystery awards. I'll find out if I won (I think I have a
fighting chance) May 6, 2000, at a big banquet in Washington, DC.
I heard
this week that Japanese rights have sold for Circles. The vanity license
plates don't translate well at all, and I don't know if they plan on
skipping the license plates, leaving them in English, or ?? A Russian
publisher has also contacted my agent. The Japanese rights took over
a year to bear fruit, so I guess I have to learn to be patient. Although
I still have not received my "French money"—$100—for
translating a single page of Circles for a textbook, I still keep spending
it, like on a fancy dress for the Agatha Awards.
Heart-Shaped
Box
My
next book is written and has gone through my editor. Currently, I'm
having the first disagreement I've ever had with her. I say one character
really needs to die, and she says the character doesn't. My agent's
theory is that publishers are looking to keep down body counts so no
one can accuse them of contributing to Columbine-type violence. We'll
see who wins on this one.
