NEW BOOKS, FOREIGN RIGHTS, AND THE MAYBENESS OF MOVIES
The
Claire Montrose Series
I just accepted an offer for Buried Diamonds,
the fourth in the Claire Montrose series. I need to finish writing it
by March, and it will come out around February 2003. In the book, Claire
finds an engagement ring, missing for 50 years. The woman who owned
the ring committed suicide—or did she?
Meanwhile,
the paperback of Heart-Shaped Box is scheduled
to come out in January, in hopes of snagging men looking for any book
with “heart” in the title for Valentines Day.
Learning
to Fly
My next book, the thriller which isn't part of the series, will come
out in May. I'm planning on traveling to DC and New York City, as well
as the Pacific Northwest, to do signings and attend events.
Even though
this year's foreign rights convention in Frankfurt, Germany in early
October had far fewer attendees than normal, there was a lot of interest
in Learning to Fly. Publishers in Spain, Germany,
Greece, Denmark and France have all asked for Learning to
Fly to consider publishing it.
And speaking
of foreign publishing, the Japanese are still laboring over a translation
of Circles of Confusion. Probably still trying
to figure out what to do with the license plates.
There has
also been some movie interest in Learning to Fly.
I must be getting jaded about these things, because I'm no longer spending
time imagining what I will wear to the premiere.
Do
You Really Like Mysteries?
There will be a mystery conference called Left Coast Crime here in Portland
March 21-24, with a lot of big name authors. Call Murder by the Book
if you want to know more.
