LEFT COAST CRIME
went to Left Coast Crime earlier this month. LCC is a mystery fan conference
for about 600 fans and 60 authors. (For 2002, it's scheduled for Portland.)
I'm still new enough at this to be in awe of other authors, so it was
a great thrill meeting Jeff Deaver, Judy Jance, Tony Hillerman, Aaron
Elkins, and Jerry Ford, among many others.
My favorite
story was when Aaron Elkins told us he was researching what it was like
to ride around in a car trunk with your hands tied behind you. He had
his wife help him get in the trunk, and she drove him around, but when
she went to unlock the trunk, the latch wouldn't work.
They called
Triple A, who directed them to a gas station. Charlotte told the attendant
her husband had been trying to fix the trunk and then had fallen in.
This story didn't look quite so plausible once the attendant saw that
Aaron's hands were tied.
