SCHOOL
VISITS/SPEAKING
Why
not choose Shock Point for a "Read it forward" program,
as three schools have done in Texas?

Speaking
In addition
to being an author of books for adults and teens, I've also taught
at Haystack, reviewed books for the Oregonian,
and written articles for Writers Digest and The Writer.
I’ve
also worked as a writer in health care, crafting everything from
ads to newsletters to brochures. Drawing on nearly 20 years of
experience as a writer, I can offer a broad perspective on the
writing life, as well as on the particular joys of writing fiction.
I love
talking about books, reading, and the craft of writing. Being a reader
is what made me a writer.
I can
tailor a visit to fit your needs. I can speak to older elementary
students, as well as readers in middle and high school about my books
and the writing process. I also offer writing workshops to smaller
groups and love speaking to adult groups at teacher and librarian
conferences. To arrange a visit, please contact me at april@aprilhenrymysteries.com.
For discounted
books for school visits, please contact Putnam library promotions. (If
you want to purchase some of my adult titles, you should contact me.)
School
visits:
My school visits cover:
• A look at how authors get their ideas and shape them into stories
• Discussion of the writing and editing process
• A creative writing exercise (depending on the age and size of
the group)
• Ample time for students to satisfy their curiosity about writing
and the life of an author
Current
topics:
Title: What If?: How a Story Grows
Audience: Grades 5-12
In this
presentation, I discuss how many books start with a "What If?" and
give students many examples of "What If" questions that led to books.
The next step is to decide what characters are needed to make the
"what if" come to life. After that comes research to flesh out the
"what if" and the characters.
I emphasize the importance of rewriting, and talk about the editing
process.
Next I lead a question and answer session. Depending on the size,
time available, and age of the group, I finish with a brief creative
writing exercise.
Title: What Happens Next?: Help an author write her
next book
Audience: Grades 4-5
In this
presentation, I discuss how many books start with a "What
If?" and give students many examples of "What If" questions
that led to books. The next step is to decide what characters are needed
to make the
"what if" come to life. After that comes research to flesh
out the
"what if" and the characters.
I emphasize
the importance of rewriting, and talk about the editing process.
I then
read the first few chapters of The Lunch Table Wars to the
group and have them brainstorm with me what might happen next. I finish
by leading a question and answer session.
Young-adult
writing program:
Suitable for smaller groups (30 or fewer). Includes exercises on plot,
characters, and strong writing, combined with a general talk on my
writing and what makes a good book.
For
adults:
I can speak to large or small groups about “Writing Mysteries
and Thrillers,” “Panties in a Twist: What Really Happens
When You Write, Work Full Time, and Parent,” or “What I
Wish I had Known Before I Was Published.” With sufficient notice,
I can also tailor a talk to your group.
Honorarium/Planning:
(Includes up to four presentations per day)
Local
School Visits (Portland area): Negotiable. Please contact
me. However, I do not do free school visits and generally only
offer discounts for special needs (e.g., “at risk”)
schools.
Other Oregon/Washington: $800
per day, plus travel and hotel if necessary. If your school is more
than three hours drive from Portland, airfare is required. There
is a discount for multiple days, so it can be helpful to join forces
with another school.
Out-of-state: $1,200 plus expenses for one day. There
is a discount for multiple days, so it can be helpful to join forces
with another school. For two days, the cost is $1,075 per day. For
three days, the cost is $950 per day. For four days, the cost is $825
per day. Five days, the cost is $700 per day.
